This page covers many of the natural items that have been added into life since my health journey began! From kitchen ware to natural household cleaners, immune supports to homemade hygienic items, here’s a list of things I believe are worth changing if a person wants to purge their home of harmful items!
I. Kitchen Cookware
Clean eating begins with clean food and directly following that is toxin free cooking utensils. Teflon coated metal leads the way in many a house wife’s kitchen with its non-stick surfaces. It also leads the way in transferring metals from pan to food and then into the body. Read about replacements and good options here: Natural and Healthy Cookware Replacements
II. Home Cleaners
III. Natural Immune Supports
I believe that eating well, resting and eliminating unnecessary stress from our lives is the best immune support! However, we all hit those unfortunate times when we’ve over-committed, haven’t been able to sleep and at just that time, sickness always creeps in. Check out these ideas and recipe that support and enable the body to do its job!
Immune Boosting Liquids
Its important to enable the body to fight winter colds before they take up residency! And putting immune supportive goods into your drinking water is a wonderful way to do just that! Not only will it remind you to stay hydrated, but it tastes good too!
Lemon Water-keep the body in good health throughout the winter months with a kick of natural vitamin C and a pH balanced body!
Rose Hip Lemon Water-rose hips for natural vitamin C and lemons to support, you can fight off any winter bug!
Flu-Warding Water-ginger, lemons and echinacea help support the immune system!
Supportive Juice-can’t stomach lemons or rose hips? Let raw apple juice be your cover up!
Because of my compromised immune system, I keep many different things on hand and try to take them throughout the winter months. As always, a good diet, adequate rest and low stress is the best choice! And when it comes to taking remedies, I’ve found the best protection in the liquids I drink throughout the day (see above). Side note: while one remedy may work for a long while, it is healthy to change up your immune supports as the body can become unresponsive to it after a year-or-so’s time!
Kick the Cold Tincture-it tastes bad but works wonders when taken every 2 hrs during the day!
Rose Hip Vinegar-very strong in vitamin C properties with semi-mild flavor. Make in fall months when rose hips are ready to be foraged and before sickness begins hitting your friends and neighbors.
Stay Away Extract-this will ward off more than sickness; you may loose a few friends as well! Composed from the juice of onions, garlic and apple cider vinegar, you’ll knock the houseflies dead with your breath! Extremely potent and effective if those in your household can withstand the smell!
IV. Natural Hygiene
With any aspect of natural hygiene, the answer lies not in the product, but in your diet! Yes, really and truly. So many issues we face today are a result of poor nutrition. Lack of proper fuel makes for poor function. Tooth decay, skin blemishes and dryness, thinning or dull hair; its a sign of inward symptoms. And while I give out the below recipes, I hold fast to this fact: its all about your diet. No product can reverse an issue caused by a deficiency in the body. Learn to see your outward symptom not as the problem, but instead an indicator of a deeper issue.
Did you know issues with breakouts on particular areas of your skin (lower back, forehead, etc) are often tied to the struggle of a particular organ…and that your eating habits affect that organ? Throughout my teen years, I had back acne quite badly. As I grew older, it seemed to be confined to the lower 1/3 of my back. Upon attending a center to help with my Lyme Disease, I was put through a regime of cleanses to prepare the body for the die-off I would experience. The liver cleanses caused my lower back to flare up far beyond acne! That 1/3 of skin was covered in a itchy, itchy, itchy red rash! It was horrible! Those at the center instantly understood the body’s indicator (my liver was overloaded with toxins) and specifically trained me so I could support my weak organ and help it do its job efficiently. Every year, I run a liver cleanse. Know what else? I don’t have even a hint of back acne anymore…unless of course, I begin eating processed foods.
Infused Oils-need quick absorption? Try infusing your own oils with the plants around you and use liquid oil as your moisturizer! Particularly great for the face!
Herbal Lotion-infuse your carrier oils with home-grown herbs, then make a lotion suitable for a pump bottle!
Deep Skin Moisturizer -don’t let the name fool you! Its whipped body butter that is so common on the internet today. If you need a deep moisturizer, this is it!
Deep Cleansing Sugar Scrub-an all time favorite of mine and customers! In all my searching for natural skin care, I never did find anything that could compete with this sugar scrub. The result it has on the skin is worth every bit of effort, whether used for hands or the entire body.
Moisturizing Bar -I have to admit, I was never a big fan of the “sticky” lotion bars! But because they were the going fad, I improvised and came up with a ‘less dense’ lotion bar that absorbed quicker and was lighter.
Skin Balm-take it to the next level! This is a waxier substance, suitable for very deep penetration! Rub it on old, dry feet and pull socks up to cover. Sleep through the night and when morning shines in, remove socks and feel the softened skin!
As with everything else, eating well is the answer to having healthy teeth! Pair that with good toothpaste and you may find yourself on the return road to health! My man has had problems with his teeth all his life, but since we changed over to humic mineral based toothpaste, he hasn’t had even one issue in the past 1 1/2 years! Of course, not everything can be accredited to just the toothpaste, but I do believe it was one of the components to the change.
Humic Mineral Tooth Powder-using minerals to brush our teeth sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?!
Humic Mineral Toothpaste-if you don’t like powders, here’s one that can be kept in a squeeze tube!
Remineralizing Toothpaste -its another one from Katie that I’ve personally tried and liked. The difficult part? Getting my hands on a good calcium powder. Where I live in the north, we can’t get it in the health food store. I believe its a worthwhile try if you are looking to go all natural!
Shampoo Bar with Soap Nuts & Oat Milk-I’ve been using this bar for almost 2 years. Its a hot-process soap and while using a bar in your hair is different, it works, is chemical free and I’ve never had healthier hair!
Quick Hair Moisturizer: take 1 Tbs of shea butter or liquid oils (such as almond, castor or olive), and beginning at scalp, massage into head and slowly stroke downward, toward ends of hair. Place in bun and let soak in for 15-30 min. Wash quickly with a natural shampoo source (see soap bar above!) Note: different kinds of hair respond differently. Try one oil for a few weeks and if displeased with the outcome, trade it out for another oil!
Natural Hairspray: Want a natural spray to help bring body and wave to the hair? Though this isn’t my own, once again Katie of wellnessmama.com has some great tips for you! Check out her sugar-based hairspray along with a compilation of natural hair-care items you can make from home!
