Hey there! I’m Autumn. And this is where I get to share a behind-the-scene glimpse of my life!
I’m an introvert who likes people, loves the outdoors and enjoys being homemaker. I’m also a real food cook, wife to a good man and traditional living enthusiast.
Unlike some, I was raised on a rural farm and reveled in the lifestyle. But like many girls, college and working years led me away. When I ended up in northern AB, I thought I’d left farm life behind for good! Not that I didn’t long for it at times. But…well…life was in the way.
After a health crisis and settling down as a newly married woman, I began to feel that persistent tug once again. The farm. It was pulling at my heartstrings.
Neither my man or I wanted to raise a family in an urban setting. And we were tired of the rat race. We wanted to live life at a slower pace, to be part of a community where people were in tune to life around them. Our dream was to save money and one day, buy land where we could raise a large portion of our own food.
Part of this desire was triggered by my ongoing battle with Lyme Disease. I did best when regularly consuming home raised food. But unfortunately, our northern climate wasn’t conducive to this need, with snow on the ground 6+ months of the year and frigid winter temperatures reaching below -40.
It was time for change.
We’re a very simple, my man and I. It usually wears well on us! But this was one time we broke through our own stereotype!
After one year of marriage, we shocked ourselves (also friends and family) by taking drastic action. Packing our mini van, we left northern BC, drove 800 miles due south and settled in a small, low-income farming community. Yes, just like that!
After a year of renting and experiencing a break-through in my health, we decided to make it permanent. And that marked the beginning of our land hunt.
While searching for a place to call our own, we learned all we could about raising and preserving food in this particular climate. A wonderful rental situation gave us that freedom. And the people here welcomed us with open arms, readily sharing not only knowledge, but their land and hearts as well.
After 2 years of intensely searching, learning and pinching our pennies, we finally found the right piece at the right price. Today, we own 2.8 acres of raw land. Our energies are currently focused on transforming the place into a small mountain farmstead. Starting with the house!
It’s been a wild journey, this return to traditional living. But the results we’ve seen in our lives and in my health have made it all worthwhile.
Hope for better living. That’s exactly what this traditional lifestyle has handed us. We’re very happy with our choice and want to share pieces of it with our readers! To inspire you to apply the best of the past for a more meaningful future.
Welcome to Better Living! Let’s do this together, shall we?
